How to pack fragile items properly
Most breakages in a move do not happen on the road but inside the box, because of poor packing. With the right materials and a few simple rules, plates, glasses, mirrors and electronics arrive at the new home intact.
The materials you need
- Small, sturdy double-wall boxes. Fragile items always go in small boxes.
- Ink-free packing paper. Newspapers stain white plates.
- Bubble wrap for anything with protrusions or thin edges.
- 5 cm packing tape and a marker.
- Cardboard sheets for mirrors and frames.
Plates and glasses
Line the bottom of the box with crumpled paper. Wrap each plate separately and stand them vertically, like in a dishwasher, not stacked. Fill glasses with paper, wrap them and place them rim down. Fill every gap so nothing moves when you lift the box.
Mirrors, frames and glass surfaces
Tape an X across the glass, wrap in bubble wrap and add cardboard on both faces. They always travel upright, never flat, and nothing is placed on top of them in the truck.
Electronics
If you still have the original packaging, use it. Otherwise wrap the device in bubble wrap, put it in a slightly larger box and fill the gaps. Remove batteries and wrap cables separately, noting which device they belong to.
Labelling and loading
Write FRAGILE and an arrow for the top side on two faces of the box. Tell the moving crew which boxes are fragile so they are loaded last and on top. If you prefer, Karathanos Trans handles the packing with professional materials and insurance cover.
